Both Dr Patel and Dr Ang are highly experienced dental practitioners with Dr Patel specialising in paediatric dentistry. We offer a broad range of dental services in the northern suburb of Woodvale. A friendly team of dental therapists, dental hygienists, dental assistants and reception staff support them.

Fully qualified and highly skilled Dental Technicians that are based in Perth are used to manufacture crowns, bridges, implants, dentures and orthodontic appliances. So you can be assured that the quality if of the highest standard.

Their goal is always to provide the correct diagnosis and advice with the aim that each patient achieves an optimum state of dental health, allowing them to function normally and be free of discomfort. Although all aspects of modern dentistry are offered, patients with more complex needs outside the scope of general practice are referred to dental specialists. This is to ensure that every patient is in receipt of the best possible care.

Meet The Team

DR. JILEN PATEL

Jilen is a highly regarded Specialist Paediatric dentist who is heavily involved with teaching, dental public health initiatives and clinical research at the University of WA and the Perth Children's Hospital. He is a senior lecturer at UWA and has been a consultant at PCH since 2018. He is passionate about providing care to underserved communities and has been involved with the design and implementation of programs for preschool children, refugee families and remote Aboriginal communities. He recently received the national outstanding young dentist award by the ADA for his contributions to the profession.

Jilen completed his undergraduate dental training with honours at the University of Western Australia and after several years of general practice went on to specialise in Paediatric Dentistry through UWA and the Princess Margaret Hospital for Children. During his training he received the Alistair Devlin Scholarship to work with and develop community child dental health programs in Cambodia and Indonesia. This work led to publications on novel methods of triaging children with severe caries risk and the suitability atraumatic restorations in children. He subsequently completed his PhD through UWA recieving the prestigious Syd Dobbin AM Grant with his focus being on improving dental services to remote communities. This led to the development of the first evidence-based continuous quality improvement framework for volunteer dental services based on a decade long partnership with remote Aboriginal communities. He maintains an active research portfolio with current projects involving novel remineralisation agents, teledentistry and paediatric hospitalisation rates.

Jilen enjoys communicating scientific evidence in a way that is simply to understand for everyone whether it be clinicians or the wider community. To this end he has received both the Royal Australasian College Emerging Lecturer Award and the Australian Dental Association/Pierre Fauchard Academy's Young Lecturer Award for his research and teaching in clinical dentistry. He also received a University citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning for “the use of innovative blended strategies to unravel contemporary evidence and inform best practice care in cariology, dental public health and paediatric dentistry.

Jilen is an alumnus of the Senior Dental Leadership program, a collaboration between King's College London and Harvard School of Dental Medicine and has received fellowships from the Academy of Dentistry International, International College of Dentists and Pierre Fauchard Academy.

When away from work Jilen enjoys acquascaping, windsurfing and birdwatching!

Mark is member of the Australian Dental Association and abids by their Code of Ethics and has a current Working with Children accreditation.

OTHER INTERESTS

Mark has competed in the Rottnest Channel swim as part of a duo team on four occasions and is a member of the Perth Flying Squadron Yacht Club. He has been a volunteer dentist at the Olympic and Commonwealth Games, the World Swimming Championships, the Rugby World Cup and has lectured extensively both in Australia and overseas, including at the National Australian Dental Association’s Congress, International and European Academies of Paediatric Dentistry and International Association of Dental Traumatology on the topics of Dental Trauma, Sports Dentistry and the use of zirconia crowns in paediatric dentistry.

In 2011 he and his dental nurse Olivia competed in the Busselton Iron Man event. Mark is also a keen cyclist and is happy to talk about any topic that involves carbon fibre or titanium!

He is a Consultant Dentist at Princess Margaret Hospital’s dental department where he has been since 1990. He is a senior clinical lecturer at the University of Western Australia School of Dentistry were he is involved in teaching of the third and forth year dental students.

Mark was invited by Sprig Oral Technologies (formally EZ-Pedo) in 2015 to train dentists wishing to incorporate the use of EZ Crowns (zirconia crowns) in children's dentitistry into their practices. He has now helped to run courses in Australia, Europe and the USA. He is the only senior instructor on faculty for Sprig outside of the USA.

Mark is also a previous examiner for the Australian Dental Council in paediatric dentistry. This body is responsible for the registration of overseas trained dentists who wish to practice in Australia.

DR. MICHAEL ANG

Michael graduated in 2000 at Otago University in New Zealand and has since had experience in both hospital and private practice environments. He moved to Perth in 2011 following a successful career in Melbourne. He has been working at Castlegate Family Dental since the move to Perth and sees both adults and children for general dentistry. Michael is also a proud father to daughters Marissa and Emersyn and in his spare time can be found at the beach or supping down the river.

DR. MARK FOSTER

Mark is finally retiring in mid-2025 and we are all very sad to see him go. He will hopefully still do some locum work for us if we can bribe him with Tim Tams and cake. Thank you Mark for your many wonderful years of service to Castlegate Family Dental Care. Over your career you have created wonderful relationships with children and their families and we wish you the best for the exciting times ahead!

JANE - Practice Manager

Jane joined the Castlegate team in 2018 as Practice Manager having emigrated from the U.K where she has spent over 30 years in dentistry.

LUCY - Dental Therapist

Originally from the UK, Lucy moved to Australia in 2013 and studied oral health therapy at Curtin University. She has spent many years working at the school dental clinics, and has a special interest and lots of experience treating children.
Lucy as a Mum to 3 boys and 2 girls, so she loves spending as much of her spare time with them exploring Perth.

Esther - Dental Therapist

Esther graduated from Curtin University with an Associate Degree in Dental Hygiene in 2010. She has a strong passion in providing exceptional patient care with empathy and a gentle approach. Esther is dedicated to making every patient feel comfortable and confident in their oral health journey.

Outside of work, she is committed doing volunteer work at the local church. She loves nature and spending with family and friends.

RACHEL - Front Office/Dental Nurse

Rachel is here for you on reception and down at Southbank. She also is a chairside dental nurse that works alongside Dr Patel and Dr Ang. In her spare time she enjoys karaoke and singing to Shaggy!

AMBER - Front Office Coordinator

Amber has been with the team since 2021 and is a local Woodvale girl! She has been a great member of the CG crew on our Front Office and is the lead for all the important letters we write.

BRENDA - Dental Nurse and Receptionist

Brenda has been a wonderful addition to our team after completing her dental nurse training with us. She did so well, we kept her and now she is training other new dental assistants. You will also see her on reception and also down at Southbank with Dr Patel.
